We understand how helpless clients can feel after a hit and run accident. On top of the overwhelming feeling of being victimized, having to navigate the right legal channels to seek compensation, let alone going through the arduous journey of proving the identity of the person who caused the injury, can be staggering. When you partner with a hit and run lawyer from Jacoby and Meyers, you will have an expert legal team collecting all of the right pieces of evidence while working with insurance companies to ensure you are not cheated out of a higher settlement.
What, Specifically, does a Hit and Run Lawyer Do?
California state law requires that any driver involved in a traffic accident must safely pull over to the side of the road, out of traffic, and come to a complete stop (if the vehicle is still drivable). If someone flees the scene of an accident failing to identify themselves, they can be prosecuted under California Vehicle Code (CVC) Sections 20001 and 20002.
A hit and run lawyer at Jacoby and Meyers is part of a highly accomplished firm with nearly 80 years of experience in defending injured parties from hit and run accidents. Your personal injury lawyer specializing in hit and run accidents will collect all of the evidence and go up against the insurance companies, and the defendant, to ensure you get the highest settlement possible. Out hit and run lawyers will also make sure you get the right medical treatment for your injuries. As an additional service, we will even help you get your car repaired.
What Should You Do After a Hit and Run Accident?
As with any collision, the first thing you should do is seek immediate medical attention. If your injuries are extreme, call 911 for an ambulance. In doing so, you should also ask for the police to come out and file a report, as this will provide your hit and run lawyer with a critical piece of evidence for seeking damages.
In the event your injuries don’t appear to be as grave as they could be otherwise, you may be tempted to follow the motorist who struck you. Under no circumstances should you do this, as this would be dangerous and could lead to worse outcomes. Instead, try to gather as much information as you can while the motorist is fleeing. This includes:
- Taking a photo of the fleeing vehicle
- Notating the license plate number
- Getting the make, model and color of the car
- Making note of the damage the other car sustained
- Noticing the direction the car was fleeing
- Taking photos of your car, any debris in the road from the collision, and don’t move anything
- Taking down the location, date, time and apparent cause of the accident
Just as you would in any other car accident, it is critical to carefully document all the information you can to help give your hit and run lawyer, your insurance company, and the police as much information as possible to ensure justice is served, and you get the compensation you deserve for your pain and losses.

How does a Hit and Run Lawyer Help Me Get Compensation?
In some cases identifying a motorist who fled the scene of an accident can be challenging. If it is necessary, your Jacoby and Meyers hit and run lawyer will conduct advanced research to identify the guilty party. This can include reviewing local surveillance cameras, as well as those positioned along the route the fleeing car was headed in. In addition, auto body shops located in large-scale areas can be notified to be on the lookout for the car with the appropriate damage matching the description of the fleeing automobile. In other situations new witnesses can be located that were previously missed.
Compensation also relates to your own insurance company. Typically, people have a type of coverage that kicks in when a hit and run accident occurs that prevents them from having to pay out of pocket for any damages, including medical treatment. This type of insurance is written into uninsured motorist coverage. Since the other driver struck your car and fled the scene, you don’t have that person’s insurance policy at your disposal.
When you partner with Jacoby and Meyers our hit and run lawyers will deal with your insurance company to get you the maximum compensation you deserve, through every avenue possible.
