CHINO HILLS, CA (June 12, 2019) – Two women were killed and five others were injured after a big-rig fell on top of a sedan on the 71 Freeway, near Butterfield Ranch Road.
The fatal crash happened around 8:15 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol. A big rig heading southbound turned over and landed on top of a red sedan, causing a chain reaction crash involving five other vehicles. Two women in a white Honda Accord were killed, and a child also riding in the vehicle was injured. The Honda was not the vehicle trapped under the semi.
Four others were injured, one critically, and were transported to a local hospital. The one critically injured is a 15-year old. Investigators closed all of the southbound lanes on the 71 while they cleaned up; traffic was detoured during this time. The California Highway Patrol said that some cars were turning around and driving the wrong way in the carpool lane in order to exit the freeway.
Southbound lanes were not reopened until after 11 a.m. The cause of the deadly accident was not immediately known.
