SAN JOSE, CA (May 11, 2019) – Armando Canales, 16, was killed by a woman driving under the influence and the wrong-way on Highway 17 near Redwood Estates.
Canales was riding in the back of a Toyota Corolla with four other passengers, ages 16 and 17, when 28-year-old Ashley Marie Oliver slammed her minivan into the vehicle. California Highway Patrol said she had been driving the wrong way on Highway 17. The fatal crash happened around 2 a.m., and firefighters responded to the scene at 2:11 a.m.
Canales died in the crash, and three other passengers reportedly suffered major injuries and were transported to the hospital. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Oliver was treated for minor injuries before being booked at Santa Clara County Jail. She was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
Canales was a football player at Washington High School. In a GoFundMe set up by his school friends to help his family pay for his funeral expenses, he was described as caring, a friend, and a young man with a promising future.
