HESPERIA, CA (May 2, 2019) – Bertha Magana-Rios was hit and killed in a pedestrian-involved car accident when she attempted to cross Phelan Road, near Beaver Avenue, in the unincorporated area of Hesperia.
The fatal crash occurred just before 9 pm. A family friend of the victim, Brittanie Anne Taylor, shared with Victor Valley News that Bertha (better known as “Alicia” by those that knew her) got off at the bus stop in front of her house and attempted to cross the street with a flashlight and her cane when she was struck and killed.
Rios, a resident of Phelan, had Cerebral Palsy, making it difficult for her to quickly cross the road. First responders found Rios in the road suffering from major injuries and CPR already in progress. The San Bernardino County Fire Department pronounced her dead on the scene at 9:10 p.m.
The female driver of the blue 2016 Toyota Scion iM that struck Bertha stayed and cooperated with law enforcement. Phelan Road was shut down in both directions during the investigation of the scene. The Victorville CHP office is still investigating the cause of the deadly accident.
