CHICO, CA (June 24, 2019) – Cathe Lawson, a 61-year old Chico woman, was killed in a car accident on Highway 32 (Deer Creek Highway) and Yosemite Drive.
Around 1:40 p.m., Lawson was stopped at a stop sign waiting for traffic to subside when another driver waved for her to proceed. She then entered the intersection, where she was struck by a GMC pickup heading for Lake Almanor. The driver, Robert Maxam, 68, appeared to be going the speed limit according to witnesses, which is 55 miles per hour in that area.
Chico police have warned not to wave other drivers into the roadway, as this often results in collisions, despite being seen as a gesture of kindness. Lawson was removed from her vehicle and transported to Enloe Medical Center, where she died a short time later.
It is unclear if Maxam was also injured in the accident. Chico police do not suspect drugs or alcohol as a factor in the fatal crash.
