SANTA BARBARA, CA (July 5, 2019) – Daniel Robinson, 54, was killed when a vehicle struck his bicycle on Modoc Road, near Encore Drive.
The collision happened just after 12:30 a.m., when a 2003 Ford Explorer heading westbound on Modoc Road struck Robinson, who was riding in the same direction outside of the designated bicycle lane. The driver of the Ford, 48-year-old Monique Martinez, stated that she did not see Robinson on his bike before she struck him.
The force of the crash ejected Robinson from his bicycle. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but Robinson was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities reported that he was not wearing a helmet or reflective materials at the time of the deadly accident.
Martinez was assessed by the California Highway Patrol and determined not to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. She and her three other passengers were not injured in the crash. Police are unsure if Robinson was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Martinez was not arrested.
