RIVERSIDE, CA (June 1, 2019) – Esteban Carlo Gonzalez, 48, was killed in a crash involving a driver under the influence at the intersection of Iowa Avenue and Palmyrita Avenue.
Ruben Aguirre, 34, was driving at a high rate of speed in his black Chevrolet Silverado around 8 p.m., when he ran a red light and plowed through the intersection, colliding into Gonzalez’s tan Honda Odyssey. Investigators believe that the Odyssey was turning left onto south Iowa Avenue from Palmyrita Avenue when the fatal accident occurred.
Gonzalez, a Grand Terrace resident, died the day after the accident from his injuries. Several others in the car with Gonzalez were injured and transported to the hospital.
Aguirre fled the scene on foot, attempting to hide in vegetation about 100 yards away, but he was eventually found by police. Witnesses of the crash identified him as the driver of the Silverado. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, felony hit-and-run and murder.
