FRESNO, CA (August 2, 2019) – Maria Martinez Ramirez, 20, was killed and 28-year-old Valerie Gonzales was injured in a multi-vehicle accident on Highway 41, just south of Harlan Avenue, near Caruthers.
The deadly crash happened just before 9 p.m., when Ramirez, who was traveling southbound on the two-lane highway, legally attempted to pass another vehicle but instead crashed into a 2018 Kia Sportage traveling northbound. The Kia collided into the passenger side of Ramirez’s 2007 Honda Civic, before being hit by a third vehicle that did not see the collision.
That third vehicle, a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse, then collided with a utility trailer before striking a pedestrian, Valeria Gonzales, who had witnessed the initial crash and was attempting to cross the roadway to help. Gonzales suffered an injury to her right leg requiring surgery and was taken to the hospital.
Ramirez was pronounced dead from blunt force trauma. She was a resident of Arkansas. Five people in total were transported to the hospital, three of which were children between the ages of 6 and 15. Authorities stated that the injuries of the five ranged from minor to major.
The crash is still under investigation. Weather conditions were reportedly warm and the roadway was dry at the time of the accident.
