2 passengers of the BART bus were also taken to the hospital with injuries. Another bus came to pick up the stranded passengers and transport them across the bridge. Police had to close multiple westbound lanes following the accident, as the box truck spilled 40 gallons of diesel fuel onto Interstate 80.
All lanes were reopened after five hours, but the accident and resulting traffic forced thousands to take BART trains for their morning commutes. According to the office BART Twitter page, their ridership following the accident was 441,321, which is up 21,656 passengers from a usual Wednesday in May.
It was not immediately known if speed, alcohol, or distracted driving was a factor in the deadly accident.
