PASO ROBLES, CA (July 15, 2019) – 55-year-old Monica Cantu was killed, and Raul Gomez and Anne Neville-Olson were injured in a wrong-way crash on Highway 101, near Spring Street.
The 2 a.m. accident occurred when Pedro Alvarado-Torres, 40, who was driving south on the northbound lanes of Highway 101, collided head-on with another vehicle. That vehicle then spun out and struck the center divider.
Two Good Samaritans exited their own vehicles to help the driver of that car, Neville-Olson, when another approaching vehicle ran over debris from the initial crash and spun out of control, crashing into them.
They were unable to run out of the path of the vehicle in time. Cantu, one of the Good Samaritans, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was an employee of Cal Poly. Gomez, the other man trying to help, suffered major injuries and was transported to the hospital, along with Neville-Olson, who sustained moderate injuries.
Police say Alvarado-Torres fled the scene on foot. Templeton CHP is asking for anyone with information on his whereabouts to call them.
