MERCED COUNTY, CA (May 27, 2019) – 40-year old Samuel Soto, his pregnant 22-year old girlfriend Alondra Lara, and their two kids Nicholas Soto, 9, and Diego Alexander Soto, 2, were killed over Memorial weekend in a crash on State Route 152, near Los Banos.
The Pomona family of four were returning home following a family member’s First Communion in San Francisco when the fatal accident occurred. The family’s 2017 Nissan Altima was traveling eastbound on State Route 152, west of Highway 33, when witnesses stated they began to swerve slightly. Suddenly, they weaved across the center media, crossing the westbound lanes, and slammed into a tree.
Lara’s mother and father, Teresa Montez and Alejandro Chavez, as well as her siblings, were driving behind the family in a separate car when the 8:30 p.m. accident happened. Police do not believe drugs, weather, or speed to be a factor in the crash, and witnesses state that the family’s vehicle seemed to be traveling 65 to 75 miles per hour.

Chavez stated that earlier that day, Soto wasn’t feeling well, but decided to drive home anyway. He believes this to be a possible factor in the deadly crash. Everyone in the car was killed instantly. The impact was so severe, the car was halved. Lara and Diego Alexander were both ejected from the car, although Lara was the only one not wearing a seatbelt. She was 6 months pregnant at the time.
Family members have since set up a GoFundme to fund their funeral expenses.
