OAKLAND, CA (May 15, 2019) – Youxing Zhang was struck and killed by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on Highway 24 at 51st Street, just west of the off ramp for Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
Around 3:15 p.m., someone reported a cyclist along the right shoulder of Highway 24. At about 3:20 p.m., Zhang, 83, attempted to cross to the center divider when he was struck fatally by a silver Toyota Prius in the No. 2, according to the CHP.
The driver reportedly did not have enough time to react and hit Zhang at 60 miles an hour, according to investigators. The driver was not injured in the deadly bicycle vs. vehicle accident.
All of the lanes going Eastbound on Highway 24 were shut down while police investigated the cause of the accident.
