SAN FRANCISCO, CA (July 21, 2019) – Benjamin Dean, 39, was killed when he was struck in the crosswalk by a Tesla being driven by 21-year-old Kelsey Mariah Cambridge, on Taylor and O’Farrell Street.
The deadly crash happened around 2 p.m., when witnesses say a Tesla that was driving at least 20 mph over the speed limit blew through a red light, broadsiding a Mini Cooper. Cambridge, the woman who had rented the Tesla over the weekend from Getaround, then struck a husband and wife who were walking in the crosswalk.
The husband, Benjamin Dean, was killed. His wife Kelly Dean was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with minor injuries. According to her Facebook page, the Clovis-based couple were in San Francisco to celebrate their wedding anniversary.
Neither of the drivers involved in the accident were injured. Cambridge cooperated with authorities, and has since been charged with one count of running a red light, and one count of vehicular manslaughter.
Drugs or alcohol are not suspected as factors in the fatal accident.
