OXNARD, CA (September 30, 2019) – Alexander Vasquez, 8, was killed, and a mother and her 9-year-old daughter were injured in a pedestrian accident on Anita Avenue and Cooper Road.
Just after 7:30 a.m., a 17-year-old girl driving a 2002 Chevrolet van struck the mother in the crosswalk with her daughter and boy neighbor as they attempted to reach Cesar Chavez School that morning. The driver of the Chevrolet had just dropped her niece and nephew off at Ramona Elementary School, which is down the block.
Vasquez was killed in the accident. The unidentified mother and daughter were transported to Ventura County Medical Center and are expected to recover.
The driver remained on the scene and cooperated with authorities. Investigators don’t believe that speed was a factor. The driver stated the sun was bright in her eyes, thus she did not see the pedestrians in the crosswalk.
Friends and family have since put up a memorial for Vasquez near the intersection where he was killed.
