SANTA BARBARA, CA (September 14, 2019) – Seven people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 154, just east of Lake Cachuma. One person was airlifted from the scene with major injuries.
Around 7:15 p.m., 44-year-old Javier Antunez, traveling eastbound in a BMW, collided head-on with a Toyota Tacoma heading westbound, driven by 43-year-old Enrique Calderon-Mendez. A 28-year-old woman driving behind Calderon-Mendez in her jeep could not stop in time to avoid the accident, and slammed into the Toyota.
Judith Hall, a 43-year-old woman riding passenger in the Toyota, had to be airlifted to the hospital. Dolores Gutierrez, 60, and Evelia Dominguez, 48, were also passengers in the Toyota and sustained moderate injuries. Calderon-Mendez reportedly sustained minor injuries.
The driver of the Jeep was given an evaluation following the accident, but ultimately did not require medical treatment. Antunez, along with his passenger 48-year-old Esther Emiko Trejo, received major injuries in the crash.
Antunez has been arrested on suspicion of DUI after police evaluated him for possible impairment at the scene. CHP stated that the accident is still under investigation.
