A 22-year-old passenger tragically died in a Highway 99 truck accident after their vehicle struck a dump truck near the Highway 50 junction in Sacramento.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 22-year-old Araceli Giselle Ahumada Velazquez of Sacramento.
According to the California Highway Patrol’s South Sacramento Department, a 22-year-old male driver of the Toyota where Velazquez was, became distracted, failing to observe that the traffic ahead had decelerated.
Unable to brake in time to avoid a collision, the Toyota struck a Peterbilt dump truck driven by a 65-year-old Pacific House man directly in front of it, causing him to hit the left rear of the dump truck. The impact led to significant intrusion into the sedan.
Swift responses from officers of the South Sacramento CHP office and firefighters of the Sacramento Fire Department brought life-saving efforts to the scene. They transported the Toyota driver and passenger to a hospital, where the woman died.
Meanwhile, the Toyota driver sustained significant injuries.
Fortunately, two young passengers, a 6-month-old infant, and a 1-year-old toddler, emerged from the collision without injuries in the vehicle’s rear seat.
Moreover, according to police, they believe that the Toyota driver was not under the influence of drugs and or alcohol during this Highway 99 truck accident.
J&M Tip: Distracted driving occurs when any action diverts a driver’s attention from the road. If a distracted driver causes an accident, you need proof of their negligence to support your case.

More About Truck Accident Liability
When it comes to truck accidents, the person or entity that owns the truck can become liable for the incident. Truck drivers usually have contract-based work relationships with their employers. Truck drivers can also end up in a legal mess if investigations determine that they violated trucking standards, causing the accident.
During the investigations, other contributing factors might be uncovered, like driver’s fatigue or maintenance failure. Federal and state trucking laws impose standards on truck driver work hours, speed limits, and driver sleep requirements, which must be met. If investigations find any violations of these standards, more parties can become liable for the incident.
