Ismael Hernandez Identified as Fatality in Golf Course Hit-and-Run on Fairway Drive in San Leandro
San Leandro, CA (April 24, 2022) – Ismael Hernandez died in a hit-and-run accident on Fairway Drive’s bicycle lane in San Leandro. According to the Sun Herald, the incident happened at around 4:15 pm on Monday (April 18).
Hernandez worked as a golf course worker at Monarch Bay Golf Club. He was riding a mower on a bicycle lane to return it for maintenance. Then, a truck’s reckless driver crashed into Hernandez. According to findings, the driver also rode a stolen Dodge Ram pickup and fled the scene after the accident.
Ismael Hernandez died after a reportedly stolen Dodge Ram pickup truck hit him on Fairway Drive’s bicycle lane.
Authorities didn’t release other details on Hernandez. Later, police identified the driver as Oakland resident Jason McDermott (43). Authorities arrested him for multiple charges, including negligent vehicular manslaughter as well as hit and run with injuries.
Monarch Bay Golf Club golf course superintendent John Jorgensen later said in a statement, “it makes me sick. It almost — It makes me rage..”
Hernadez was a single father to three. Jorgensen continued, “he worked his butt off for his family… Ismael was the most gentle man I ever met.”
Jorgensen admired Hernandez for his hard work as a maintenance crew member at Monarch Bay. Jorgensen said, “it was so senseless for a man who’s so gentle, who is so – he never, ever, ever had a frown on his face.”
