Oceanside DUI Crash Left One Fatal, Four Others InjuredSix People Injured, Authorities Arrested One
Oceanside, CA (August 10, 2023) – One person died while four others incurred moderate to major injuries after an Oceanside DUI crash. Police also arrested the suspected DUI driver. According to Fox 5, the accident occurred around 8:58 p.m. on Wednesday.
An Oceanside DUI crash killed one and injured six victims on Interstate 5, north of State Route 78. Authorities also arrested the suspected DUI driver.
The California Highway Patrol responded to a fatal Oceanside DUI crash involving multiple vehicles on Interstate 5.
According to the authorities, a red sedan was parked on the right side of the road for unknown reasons when a black Chevrolet Corvette, traveling at high speed, hit the sedan from the right shoulder, causing it to move into the number four lane.
Consequently, the sedan collided with an 18-wheeler in that lane.
The driver of the Corvette, a 39-year-old man from Oceanside, fled the scene on foot and ran up a nearby hill. However, officers located him and placed him under arrest.
Unfortunately, an occupant in the red sedan, whose identity is currently unknown, died at the accident scene.
Meanwhile, four other passengers suffered from moderate to major injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital.
Due to the collision, the right lanes on northbound I-5 at State Route 78 and the westbound SR-78 to northbound I-5 connector ramp were temporarily shut down.
The CHP confirmed that the Corvette driver, Edwin Vincent Hoffman, was taken into custody and faces several charges stemming from the accident.
Evidence has already suggested that DUI may have played a significant factor in the crash.
As a result, Hoffman faces charges of felony DUI, felony hit and run, and gross vehicular manslaughter.
