Officials stated that the helicopter’s last known location was received on Tuesday evening around 23:30 local time.
Crews then responded to an area near Lake Morena, California. However, search efforts were impeded by heavy snow and wintry conditions in the area.
Moreover, they located the aircraft hours later in the Cuyamaca Mountains, approximately 45 miles (74 km) from its intended destination.
Notably, the incident occurred following a powerful winter storm in the region, resulting in heavy rain and significant snowfall in the mountainous areas.
Meanwhile, Maj Gen Michael J Borgschulte, commander of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, expressed profound sadness in a statement on Thursday, “It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I share the loss of five outstanding Marines from 3d Marine Aircraft Wing and the Flying Tigers.”
After learning of the tragedy, President Joe Biden also extended his condolences to the troops’ families.
