The Most Dangerous Times to Drive in Los Angeles (2025 SWITRS Data)
A Data Analysis of 204,253 LA County Crashes (2021–2025)

Los Angeles County, located in Southern California, is the 11th largest county in California, with more than 10 million residents. Our expert car accident lawyers analyzed 204,253 crashes from 2021 to 2025, and found that the busiest hours are not the deadliest, and the months with the most crashes are not the most fatal. These differences reveal when serious crashes actually happen and why the timing rarely matches what most drivers assume.
The data comes from SWITRS, California’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System, maintained by the California Highway Patrol and accessed through UC Berkeley SafeTREC TIMS. Unlike city-level open data limited to LAPD jurisdiction, SWITRS captures every reported crash across all of LA County, including freeway corridors and unincorporated communities.
This report examines when driving in Los Angeles County is truly most dangerous and what those patterns mean for everyday drivers.
Key Findings at a Glance
- Hours: The most crashes occur at 5 PM (14,908 total or an average of 8 crashes every 5 PM), but 2 AM is the most dangerous. It has a 5.03% fatalities per crash and about 1.9× higher risk when adjusted for traffic volume. Alcohol is involved in 39.4% of crashes at this hour.
- Days: Fridays record the most crashes (32,043 or an average of 122 crashes every Friday), but Sundays are the most dangerous. It has 2.34% fatalities per crash, 17.6% alcohol involvement, and 21% of crashes are hit-and-run.
- Months: October has the most crashes (19,188 or an average of 3,838 crashes every October), but April has the highest fatalities per crash at 1.91%.
- Most dangerous holiday: New Year’s Day has the highest fatalities per crash (5.74%, nearly 3× baseline), with alcohol in 1 in 4 crashes. The Thanksgiving window (Nov 22–28) is close behind at 5.52%. July 3 ranks third at 4.55%.
- Weather: Most crashes happen in clear, dry conditions simply because more people are on the road. Fog is the most dangerous weather condition with a 5–7% fatalities per crash in winter months, 3–4× higher than baseline. Rain, counterintuitively, has a lower fatalities per crash than clear weather.
- Peak convergence: The most dangerous period is from 12 AM to 3 AM on weekends in the months of December–February. It is when late-night driving, alcohol, and wet roads overlap. Crashes in this window are fewer in total but disproportionately severe.

Methodology
This analysis uses crash records from SWITRS, the authoritative statewide crash database maintained by the California Highway Patrol. Data was accessed through the UC Berkeley SafeTREC Traffic Injury Mapping System (TIMS) and covers all reported crashes in Los Angeles County for the years 2021 through 2025.
The study period spans 204,253 crashes. 2020 was excluded as a statistical outlier due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s dramatic impact on traffic volume and crash patterns. 2025 crash counts are complete; however, severity classifications (injury vs. fatal) for the most recent year remain provisional, as severe crashes often take six to twelve months to finalize in the SWITRS system. Fatal figures for 2025 should be interpreted accordingly.
To account for the fact that more cars on the road means more crashes regardless of danger, we built a Crash Risk Index that adjusts for traffic volume by hour. Think of it as measuring danger per trip, not danger per hour. An index of 100 is the average across all hours; 190 means a given hour is 1.9 times more dangerous than average for the individual driver on the road. Traffic volume weights are derived from Caltrans PeMS District 7 mainline detector data (2021–2025, all 60 months), covering the Los Angeles County state highway network. Surface street and local road volumes are not separately captured; freeway hourly patterns serve as the volume distribution model for the index.
Dangerous Hours: When Crashes Peak in LA
Most people assume rush hour is the most dangerous time to drive in Los Angeles. The raw crash numbers support that intuition — but they tell only half the story.

5 PM has the most crashes (14,908 or an average of 8 crashes at every 5PM). However, 2 AM is the deadliest hour – with a 5.03% fatalities per crash. Alcohol is involved in 39.4% of crashes at 2 AM.
Raw Crash Volume: The 5 PM Problem
By sheer count, 5 PM is the most dangerous hour on LA County roads. Between 2021 and 2025, the 5 PM hour accounted for 14,908 crashes — more than any other hour of the day. The 3 PM through 7 PM window accounts for more than 28% of all daily crashes, driven almost entirely by afternoon commute volume. The chart below (Figure 1) plots crash counts alongside total injury counts by hour, showing how both metrics rise and fall in near-lockstep through the commute window.

Here are the main findings from the data: the highest number of crashes at 5 PM. It doesn’t mean it’s the most dangerous time to drive. It mainly reflects heavier traffic during rush hour. As shown in Figure 2 below, crash volume and fatalities follow different patterns. While crashes peak at 5 PM (14,908), fatalities rise after dark and stay highest between 8 PM and 11 PM, with 261, 264, 255, and 242 deaths respectively over the study period. The fatalities per crash at 5 PM is relatively low at 1.08%, while from 9 PM to midnight it increases sharply, averaging between 3.2% and 5.1%.

In short, traffic volume explains why crashes are most common at 5 PM, but it doesn’t explain why nighttime crashes are significantly more likely to be fatal.

Fatal Crash Rate: The 2 AM Problem

Crashes that occur between 2 AM and 3 AM are far more likely to be fatal. Figure 2 above shows this in the raw fatality counts. Figure 3 shows one of the contributing factors.

The data shows that 2 AM is the most dangerous hour to drive, with a 5.03% fatal crash rate, meaning about 1 in 20 crashes at that time is deadly. In contrast, the 8 AM hour has a much lower fatalities per crash of just 0.69%.

As shown in Figure 3, fatalities per crash closely mirror alcohol involvement across all hours of the day. At 2 AM, 39.4% of crashes involve alcohol, the highest in the dataset, with rates rising sharply after 9 PM (18.2%) and peaking between midnight and 2 AM. This aligns with bar closing times in California, when impaired drivers return to the roads.
At the same time, quieter roads often lead to higher speeds, and crashes at this hour tend to have fewer witnesses and slower emergency response. Together, these factors help explain why late-night crashes are far more likely to be fatal.
The Crash Risk Index: Adjusting for Traffic Volume
To capture both the frequency and severity dimensions together, we built a crash risk index that normalizes crash counts by expected traffic volume for each hour. An index value of 100 represents the average level of danger across all hours. Table 1 below puts both risk types side by side — adjusting for how much traffic is actually on the road at each time.

At a risk index of 190, 2 AM is 1.9 times more dangerous per vehicle on the road than the average hour. Based on Caltrans PeMS traffic data, 5 PM has a risk index of 120, or about 20% above daily average, showing that rush hour still carries a higher chance of crashes overall. However, crash fatality is lower during rush hour, with a 5 PM fatalities per crash of just 1.08%. The safest window is the morning commute, from 6 AM to 10 AM, with risk index values between 55 and 88.

In simple terms, driving during peak hours increases the chance of being in a crash, while driving late at night, especially between midnight and 4 AM, greatly increases the risk that a crash will be severe or fatal. This same pattern of higher crash volume but lower severity during busy periods, and fewer crashes but more severe outcomes at night, also appears across days of the week, with one day clearly standing out from the rest.
Dangerous Days: Friday Has the Most Crashes. Sunday Is Deadliest.
Day-of-week data shows the same pattern seen in the hourly analysis—higher crash volume does not always mean higher severity, and the difference is meaningful.

Friday has the most crashes (32,043 or an average of 122 crashes every Friday). However, Sunday is the deadliest day — with a 2.34% fatalities per crash, 17.6% alcohol involvement, and 21% of crashes are hit-and-run.
Friday: Highest Raw Volume
Friday recorded 32,043 crashes over the study period — more than any other day of the week. This reflects a combination of high commute volume, more discretionary travel, and the beginning of weekend social activity. Friday also showed 18.1% hit-and-run involvement, the second highest of any day.
Friday’s crash volume dominance shows up in both crash counts and injury totals. The chart below (Figure 4) maps both metrics across each day of the week — the Friday peak driven by commute traffic and pre-weekend activity is visible, with injury volume tracking closely.

Sunday: The Deadliest Day
Despite having 16% fewer crashes than on Friday, Sunday is consistently the deadliest day on LA County roads.
Crash volume and fatality counts tell opposite stories by day. Sunday leads in severity. The chart below (Figure 5) makes the divergence visible — Sunday’s fatality count is elevated relative to its crash volume in a way Friday’s is not.

Sunday’s 2.34% fatalities per crash is 59% higher than the midweek average. More than 1 in 5 Sunday crashes involves hit-and-runs, the highest of any day of the week. The elevated alcohol involvement is largely linked to Saturday night activity that extends well past midnight, with many early Sunday crashes reflecting the aftermath of late-night driving.
The overnight window from Saturday into Sunday, roughly midnight to 4 AM, brings together the highest-risk conditions in the data. Crashes during this window are more likely to involve alcohol, more likely to be fatal, and more likely to involve a driver who flees the scene.
While time of day and day of week clearly shape crash risk, the data also shows a third important factor: time of year. One month, in particular, stands out and deserves closer attention.
Dangerous Months: October Leads in Volume, April in Fatalities Per Crash
Unlike the sharp hourly and daily peaks, monthly crash patterns in LA County are relatively flat, with the difference between the highest and lowest months at roughly 21%. Two months, however, stand out from the rest.

October has the most crashes (19,188 or average of 3,838 crashes every month) as the evening commute shifts into the dark. April has the highest fatalities per crash of any month (1.91%).
October: Most Crashes
October recorded 19,188 crashes over the study period — the highest of any calendar month – visible in Figure 6. October’s peak has two probable contributing factors. First, the evening commute window begins overlapping with dusk for the first time since spring — when drivers adjusted to summer’s late sunsets encounter rapidly changing light conditions.
Second, pedestrian exposure rises sharply as autumn arrives — NHTSA’s National Pedestrian Crash Report identifies autumn as the deadliest season for pedestrians nationally, with October and November recording the highest pedestrian fatality totals of any months of the year. Halloween intensifies the risk further: NHTSA’s analysis of a decade of FARS data found October 31 and January 1 to be the two deadliest days of the year for pedestrians, each averaging 24 fatalities nationally. In LA County, SWITRS data confirms the local pattern — Halloween averages 141 crashes, 12% above a typical October day, with pedestrian involvement rising to 12.4% of crashes versus 9.4% on a normal October day.

The sunset timing is the key factor. In July, the sun sets near 8 PM in Los Angeles. By October 1 it sets around 6:55 PM, and by October 31 near 6:00 PM, squarely inside the peak commute window. The effect on the evening driving window is dramatic.
Pedestrians bear a disproportionate share of this exposure. During the 6–8 PM commute window across all months, pedestrians account for 10–14% of crash victims. As fall and winter compress daylight hours, that concentration intensifies. A commuter walking to a bus stop at 6 PM in July does so in full sunlight. The same trip in October happens at dusk or in early dark — when dark-condition crashes are roughly 2.8× more deadly per incident than daylight crashes. Unfortunately, pedestrians have no headlights, no crumple zone, and no advance warning when a vehicle loses control.
Table 3 below provides the full monthly lighting breakdown, confirming that October marks the inflection point where dark-condition crashes begin to dominate LA County road risk. 39.5% of all October crashes in LA County — 7,580 in total — occurred under dark or dusk conditions. That dark-crash share is 32% higher than the summer average (roughly 30%). In absolute terms, October logs more dark crashes than any month between March and October, and nearly as many as January, despite carrying a significantly higher crash volume.

April: Highest Fatalities Per Crash
April recorded the highest fatal crash rate of any month at 1.91%. Spring travel patterns and the Easter holiday window contribute, but the motorcycle factor deserves specific attention. Motorcycle riders are 28 times more likely to die in a crash per mile traveled than passenger car occupants, according to NHTSA. In a county with year-round riding weather, even the modest spring uptick in motorcycle activity can move the monthly fatalities per crash measurably. Increased motorcycle volumes after winter months may all contribute to this seasonal uptick in crash severity.
The fatality pattern by month separates volume from severity. The chart below (Figure 7) shows that April’s fatal crash count is the highest of the year despite April ranking fifth in total crashes — a divergence that points to elevated per-crash severity rather than sheer volume.
Weather and Seasonal Risk

Most crashes happen in clear weather, but fog is the deadliest condition — a 5–7% fatalities per crash in winter months, 3–4× the clear-weather rate. Rain, counterintuitively, is not the worst threat drivers assume.
While 88% of LA County crashes occur in clear conditions, weather type interacts with season in ways that are not intuitive. Fog is consistently the most lethal condition — not rain. The heatmap below shows fatal crash rates by condition and month. Grey cells have fewer than 20 crashes and should be treated with caution.
Fog in January (7.0%), March (6.3%), and December (5.3%) kills at 3–4× the clear-weather rate. Rain, by contrast, produces fatalities per crash at or below the 1.7–1.8% clear baseline — drivers reduce speed in visible wet conditions. The October inflection point is notable. First rains return on roads slick with summer oil buildup, compounding the darkness-onset effect that makes October the highest crash-volume month of the year.
Dangerous Holidays: New Year’s Day Is the Deadliest Holiday on LA Roads

Holiday crash data can be misleading at first glance. Every major holiday in this dataset records fewer total crashes than a typical weekday, like Tuesday– but this doesn’t mean the roads are safer. Most of the risk simply shifts to the days before the holiday.

Thanksgiving danger peaks on Wednesday evening, July 4th travel is highest on July 3rd, and Christmas travel is most intense on December 23rd and 24th. By the time the holiday arrives, many people have already reached their destination, which is why overall crash numbers drop.
However, the crashes that do happen on the holiday tend to be more severe. With fewer cars on the road, higher speeds, and increased alcohol use, each crash is more likely to result in serious or fatal outcomes.
Holiday Fatalities Per Crashs vs. a Typical Day
New Year’s Day is the single most dangerous date in the dataset, with a 5.74% fatalities per crash, nearly three times the 1.98% county-wide baseline and alcohol-involved in 1 in 4 crashes. Table 4 lists each holiday with its corresponding fatalities per crash, how it compares with a typical day, and its alcohol involvement.

The Thanksgiving window (Nov 22–28) ranks second, peaking at 5.52%. Thanksgiving Eve, Thanksgiving Day, and Black Friday all rotate through that date range depending on where the fourth Thursday falls each year, concentrating risk across several consecutive days. July 3 ranks third at 4.55%, since the night before Independence Day draws most of the holiday travel. The actual July 4th is near baseline at 2.09%.
Six holidays in this analysis fall on floating calendar dates — MLK Day, Presidents Day, Easter, Memorial Day, and Labor Day shift to a different calendar week each year, which means their danger window doesn’t cluster at a fixed date.
For the three-day-weekend Monday holidays, the real risk lands the day before because return travel bunches up on Sunday evening. so the Sunday consistently outpaces the holiday Monday.
The Pattern Is DUI, Not Volume
Fifteen of the eighteen date windows show above-baseline fatalities per crash. The three exceptions are the holiday Mondays themselves — Labor Day (1.78%), Memorial Day (1.70%), and Presidents Day (1.58%). These are among the safest days on LA roads. In all other entries, alcohol involvement is elevated.
Across every other entry, alcohol involvement is elevated. At its core, the holiday crash problem in LA County is a DUI problem.
The pattern is consistent. Outbound travel spreads across the Thursday and Friday before the weekend, then return travel concentrates on Sunday evening. The Sundays before those same Mondays reach 3.36%, 2.56%, and 2.75%, respectively.
Pre-Memorial Day Sunday is a separate case. At 21.6% alcohol involvement, it has the highest impaired-driving rate of any entry in the table aside from the New Year’s Day.
MLK Day is an outlier: a 3.11% fatalities per crash (1.6×) with only 9.1% alcohol involvement — near the county average of 10.5%, suggesting a cause not identifiable from SWITRS data alone.
Overall, the most dangerous times are not holiday afternoons — they are the overnight hours following celebration peaks. A 2 AM drive on New Year’s morning combines the county’s most dangerous hour with its most dangerous calendar date. These patterns repeat with remarkable consistency across all five years of data.
The Bottom Line: LA Crash Risk at a Glance
Traffic is heaviest during rush hour, but that is not when the most deaths happen. The summary table below shows where the real danger is on the road.

What This Means If You Drive in LA
The data points to two distinct risk profiles for LA County drivers and understanding which one applies to you can inform how you approach time on the road.
High volume, lower severity risk (commute hours): If you drive primarily during peak hours — 7 AM to 9 AM and 3 PM to 7 PM — your exposure to raw crash events is highest. Most of these crashes involve rear-end collisions and minor impacts. Defensive following distance and attention to sudden traffic changes are your main protections.
