Authorities responded to a fatal multi-vehicle crash caused by a fleeing suspect at Pacific Coast Highway and 2nd Street in Long Beach.
At least seven people, including an infant, were taken to hospitals for treatment.
Unfortunately, one victim died at the scene. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office identified her as Sara Shorteno of Toronto, Canada.
Shorteno was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the crash.
According to authorities, a police chase started after a driver sped away during a traffic stop for a traffic violation near Marina Drive and Pacific Coast Highway.
The suspect, now identified as Chaz Lamar Long of Antioch, reportedly moved to the driver’s seat while the police were conducting a records check of the female driver.
Long then continued on and even drove on the wrong side of the road at some point in the chase. He eventually ran a red light and slammed into eight cars on the Pacific Coast Highway.
After the crash, Long allegedly attempted to run away from the scene but was still taken into custody by the police.
The Long Beach PD later booked Long on suspicion of murder, felony child endangerment, felony evading, and felony hit-and-run. It was also discovered that he had an outstanding federal no-bail warrant for weapons violations.

More About Car Accident Liability
Various circumstances of the car accident can pinpoint the liability of damages. In some instances, thorough investigations can reveal careless behavior. This can include the simple act of recklessly turning or cutting in front of another vehicle. In terms of determining who is at fault for an accident, this can be defined by common law. Any Sacramento or Los Angeles car accident lawyer recognizes that fault has four basic levels:
- Recklessness (wanton conduct)
- Intentional misconduct
- Strict liability
However, different state laws can have variations of applicable traffic laws. For example, in some states, multiple drivers can be liable for an accident. This is why thorough investigations are important after a car accident. Having a strong case showing the liability of the at-fault party can help guarantee your compensation.
