Statements from the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing released on both Friday and Saturday confirmed that Mettler was the sole occupant and pilot of the Hornet during a training flight near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California.
Mettler belonged to the Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 224, a 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing unit stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina. His squadron, recognized as the Fighting Bengals, had traveled to California for Service Level Training Exercise 5-23.
Major Gen. Scott Benedict, the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing commander, stated on Saturday, “It is with great humility that I offer my deepest condolences to Maj’s family, loved ones, and friends. Andrew Mettler. You remain at the forefront of our thoughts and prayers.”
Mettler’s call sign was Simple Jack, as indicated in the Saturday statement from the wing.
Originally from Marietta, Georgia, Mettler earned a mechanical engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2007 and was commissioned that same year.
Throughout his over fifteen-year tenure in the Corps, Mettler served in various assignments, including the Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101 based in Miramar, California, and the Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 225 in Yuma, Arizona.
