Alameda, CA (November 03, 2021) – Wilma Chan, 72, died in a pedestrian crash with a vehicle on Shoreline Drive, near Grand Street, in Alameda County.
The collision was reported around 02:30 p.m. Authorities responded to the scene shortly thereafter. Longtime Alameda County supervisor and former Assembly Majority Leader Wilma Chan had been walking her dog on Shoreline Drive when she was struck by a car.
Police and first responders found Chan to be unresponsive. Later, responders transported her to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where medical staff were unable to revive her. The defendant stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
At this time, authorities don’t know if drugs or alcohol are factors in the deadly crash. Many leaders across California have been sharing their condolences since the news broke out. Chan was the first Asian American to be elected to the local County Board of Supervisors. She was then elected to the California State Assembly and became the first woman and first Asian American to be Majority Leader.
