A fatal Foster Farms hit-and-run accident in Fresno County resulted in the death of a worker on Wednesday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the victim, 25-year-old Jose Aguilera, was struck by a Chrysler Pacifica van driven by 40-year-old Melecio Hernandez-Ayala, an employee of Foster Farms through a temporary agency.
Hernandez-Ayala, who used the company van without permission, collided with Aguilera as he walked on the property located on Englehart Avenue in Reedley.
After the collision, responders rushed Aguilera to the hospital after the crash, but sadly, he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, Hernandez-Ayala fled the scene. However, police later spotted the driver during a traffic stop about a mile to two miles away. He turned himself into the officer.
Hernandez-Ayala was then arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges of felony hit and run and stolen vehicle.
According to Officer Mike Salas, his charges could have been different if he had remained at the scene and provided aid.
The tragic incident has left Aguilera’s family devastated. His sister, Maria Najera, expressed her grief and described Aguilera as a dedicated family man who cared deeply for his two young children and siblings.
“I have no words for him right now. Just that I hope that he knows he took someone innocent. He didn’t deserve this. My brother didn’t deserve this,” Najera mentioned.
Law enforcement officials do not suspect drugs or alcohol to be contributing factors in the incident.
However, authorities discovered that Hernandez-Ayala had no valid driver’s license and had a prior misdemeanor charge.
He is currently held in the Fresno County Jail with a bond set at $20,000.
Furthermore, the investigation into this Foster Farms hit-and-run crash continues as the community mourns the loss of Jose Aguilera.
