Mary Lou Flores Fatal in Northwest Fresno Crash After a Car-to-Car Shooting
Fresno, CA (August 2, 2023) – Mary Lou Flores (66) was identified as the fatality in a Northwest Fresno crash after a car-to-car shooting. According to ABC30, the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
Mary Lou Flores succumbed to fatal injuries in a Northwest Fresno crash following a car-to-car shooting.
The Fresno Police Department responded to two separate calls, one for a shooting victim at a nearby Walmart and one for a crash at the intersection of Shaw and Brawley Avenues.
Detectives learned that three vehicles were traveling southbound on Brawley Avenue when someone in a Toyota RAV4 began firing at a Nissan Sentra.
A 24-year-old man driving a Chevy Malibu was struck in the head and pulled into the nearby Walmart to call the police.
Meanwhile, authorities identified the woman driving the Nissan Sentra as 66-year-old Mary Lou Flores.
The Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Sentra continued down Brawley Avenue at what investigators say was 60 to 70 miles per hour. Both cars collided and caught fire at the intersection of Brawley and Weber Avenues.
“Traveling at that speed is difficult to negotiate the curve that is coming up,” said Lt. Paul Cervantes.
They took Mary Lou Flores and the other occupants in the car to the hospital, where Flores was later declared dead.
On the other hand, a 24-year-old is still in critical condition at the hospital but is expected to survive his injuries, according to the police.
Police believe no other people inside Flores’s car were struck by gunfire.
The male driver of the RAV4 and a female passenger fled the scene on foot. Officers are yet to locate both suspects. It is also still unknown who fired shots from the RAV4.
Lt. Cervantes confirmed that the 24-year-old has family connections to Flores, but the police have not yet established how they are related.
Detectives revealed that this incident originated from a prior disturbance that involved all parties, and the Fresno police responded to that disturbance before turning to the shooting.
“Miss Flores did not deserve to be involved in this tragedy,” Cervantes said.
The Fresno Police Department is investigating this incident as a homicide, marking it the city’s 23rd homicide of the year.
By this time last year, there had already been 36 homicides.
