According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m. when the man was driving a 2005 Honda southbound on Highway 29/128, north of Ehlers Lane.
He lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons, causing it to veer southwest.
The Honda then collided with a power pole and a tree before stopping on its wheels, facing north.
Unfortunately, the motorist died at the scene just 15 minutes later.
At this time, his identity is being withheld pending notification of his relatives.
CHP suspects alcohol or drugs may have played a role in this St. Elena solo crash.
While the investigation was underway, traffic on Highway 29/128 had to be redirected around the crash scene, resulting in a full roadway reopening about three hours later.
