A Northridge DUI crash killed Officer Darrell Cunningham Shamily and his passenger after an alleged drunk driver hit their vehicle.
A Northridge DUI crash on Saturday fatally injured an off-duty Los Angeles Department police officer and a passenger, as confirmed by the L.A. County medical examiner’s office.
LAPD Chief Michel Moore identified the victim as Officer Darrell Cunningham Shamily, commonly known as Officer Cunningham.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the collision occurred at West Roscoe Boulevard and Lindley Avenue.
Reports indicate that Officer Cunningham, along with two passengers in a white Infiniti, was traveling northbound on Lindley Avenue when the BMW struck their vehicle.
The BMW driver, later identified as 20-year-old Brian David Olivarez, drove up to 100 mph and failed to stop at a red light before colliding with the other vehicle.
The BMW sedan then hinged between a tree and an apartment building, trapping three individuals who had to be extricated by firefighters.
Unfortunately, Officer Cunningham and the front-seat passenger in the Infiniti, whose identity is being withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.
Additionally, an off-duty San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy who was a passenger in Officer Cunningham’s vehicle, the BMW driver, and a passenger from the BMW were transported to a hospital in at least serious condition.
Moreover, preliminary investigations have indicated that Olivarez was under the influence of alcohol at the time of this Northridge DUI crash.
He also would be facing charges of gross vehicular manslaughter and additional charges as further evidence is gathered.
Chief Moore remembered Officer Cunningham “as hardworking, honest, a person you can go to get the job done with a great attitude.”
He had served with the department for just under five years and had been on duty just two nights before the tragic collision.
Furthermore, Cunningham leaves behind a fiancée and two young sons, aged 6 and 3.
