NORTHRIDGE, CA (July 5, 2019) – Two people are dead, including suspect Joseph Robert Carretero, and another is in critical condition after a police pursuit turned into a deadly crash on Reseda Blvd, near Devonshire Street.
The California Highway Patrol stated that the pursuit began just after 1 a.m., when Carretero fled a traffic stop for having fraudulent registration, leading them to believe the 1997 Toyota Paseo he was driving was stolen. The pursuit began on California State Route 118, and ended on Reseda Blvd, when the CHP called off the chase when it became too high speed.
Carretero continued traveling at a high rate of speed and seconds later slammed into two parked cars, including a Toyota RAV4, which had a woman sitting inside. That woman, only identified as a 60-year-old, was transported to the hospital but died shortly thereafter.
Carretero, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle in the accident, and was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in his car, not identified, was critically injured and was taken to Northridge Hospital.
The crash is still under investigation.
