TEMECULA, CA (June 4, 2019) – Janet Genao was killed and 3 others were injured after a drunk driver caused a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 15, near Rancho California Road.
The deadly accident happened around 7:25 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-15, when a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado being driven by Javier Caldera, a 25-year old Washington man, slammed into a Nissan Altima. Witnesses say Caldera appeared to be driving in excess of 100 miles per hour when the initial accident happened. The crash was captured on another vehicle’s dashcam.
The incident involved four other vehicles, one of which veered off the road and into the Temecula City Hall parking lot, crashing into a structure. Janet Genao, a 44-year old Murrieta woman and the driver of the Altima, was pronounced dead at the scene. She leaves behind a husband and a teenage daughter.
Mike Rivera-Aguilar, 38, was the driver of a Chevy S-10 pickup that drove off the road. He suffered broken ribs, a broken leg, and a facial fracture. Two other drivers, an Irvine man and a Mississippi man, suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital.
Caldera was not injured in the accident. The California Highway Patrol has stated that Caldera had hit another vehicle just a mile before the fatal accident. He was arrested for driving under the influence and has previous DUI convictions in Washington state, the DA says.
